Mid Calder woman wins midwife of the year

Midwife of the year

MIDWIFE Marion Campbell has scooped an award for being top of her profession.

The Royal College of Midwives have this week named Marion of Mid Calder, as the winner of the new Johnson’s Baby Mums’ Midwife of the Year award.

Marion, who is based at Carmondean Health Centre, was nominated by mum, Sarah Drummond, for going beyond the call of duty and making a significant impact throughout both her pregnancy and birth of her son.

The RCM Annual Midwifery Awards exist to reward the excellence, innovation and impact of midwifery practice in the UK.

This year the introduction of the new award has taken the partnership further, as Johnson’s Baby sponsor the first and only award to recognise the impact midwives have on mothers.

The winning midwives were nominated by mums whose lives they have helped, or had an impact on, and were judged by a carefully selected panel of mums and midwives.

The judges considered, amongst other things, to what extent the midwife demonstrated best clinical practice, support for mum’s emotional care, and support for strengthening the bond between mum and baby.

Six winners have been announced overall, each winning an award for their region, with one of the six being selected as the overall winner.

Winning these awards enables the midwives to showcase the work they do to their colleagues throughout the RCM, their management and their local community.

Further to the honour of being selected each regional winner, and mum who nominated them, have been invited to attend a prestigious award ceremony in London, where the finalists will be presented with their prize.

Louise Silverton, deputy general secretary of the RCM commented:

“We are delighted to be able to announce Marion as the regional winner for Scotland.

“While there were many amazing midwives nominated, the judges felt Marion stood out as someone who deserved to be recognised for their fantastic achievements.

“We look forward to working with Johnson’s Baby again next year to make the awards an even better success.”

Dr Charles Winstanley, chairman, NHS Lothian, added his congratulations to Marion.

He said: “We are delighted that Marion Campbell has been named the Scottish Midwife of the Year 2010.

“The award recognises the real difference Marion makes to women’s birthing experience in West Lothian.

“Being nominated for the award by one of her patients shows how much new parents appreciate the help and support that Marion gives.

“It is not the first time a member of our midwifery staff has been recognised for the dedication they show to mothers and babies.”
