I CHAIRED a protest meeting today recently about the proposed cessation of rail concessions for the elderly and disabled, over 200 people attended – but it generated more heat than light.
On the one hand, we had the Leader of West Lothian Council telling us that no such decision was ever made, and that this is a vile rumour circulated by the Labour Party.
On the other hand, we had Labour Councillors trying to hi-jack the meeting by handing out fliers with the “facts”, ie that a decision was taken on June 19 by the Executive Committee of West Lothian Council.
Then, into the equation, was dropped a standard letter written by Alex Linkston, Chief Executive, in response to protesters who had written to him, stating... “Furthermore, £85k of the money saved on the concessionary rail scheme will be reinvested in public transport from financial year 2009/10 to benefit the wider community. The exact nature of this investment will be determined by the council later in the year”...
So, here’s Alex telling us what they plan to do with the money they have saved from stopping rail concessions!!!
The full letter is a joy to read, and is available should you wish to print it in its entirety.
The meeting ended happily, with the Leader of the Council pledging to vote against the motion to end rail concessions for pensioners and the disabled.
Robert Burns said: “Facts are chiels that winna ding”, but where o where are the facts here?
