No-one should be surprised at the state of Mayfield

I READ with interest your recent article on Mayfield being among the poorest areas in the country.

After all the years of underfunding and importing single parents, drug addicts, people who do not want to work, this should be no surprise to anyone.

I grew up in the area some 30 years ago and it has produced some fine working class men and women including police inspectors, engineering tradesmen, technically gifted draughtsmen and civil servants.

Perhaps family values are not the same as they were years ago when we all played football in the street and went home for a jam piece.

The old neighbours that have left us will be turning in their graves at the content of this report compiled by West Lothian Council.

Miners, janitors and very respectable people who all looked after one another and will be horrified at the state of their gardens now.

No doubt there are many more areas in need of upgrading in West Lothian and those in power especially my "hame" toun should be doing much more.
