Nine man Broxburn out of Scottish Cup

BROXBURN were knocked out of the Junior Scottish Cup this weekend as they tumbled to a 2-0 home defeat against Thorniewood.

The county club also ended the match with just nine men after John Wilson and Steven Payne were both sent off.

Broxburn were unfancied from the start with the team from Cumbernauld the bookies favourites.

But despite this they enjoyed an excellent, battling first half in which they gave as good as they got, holding the Lanarkshire side to a goalless first 45.

However disaster struck in the second half as they were reduced to 10 men.

Tough challenges were going in from each side but the referee took exception to one from Wilson who was sent packing. The tackle merited a yellow card maybe but a red seemed a tough decision.

It quickly got worse when Payne followed Wilson into the stand for an early bath but there was less sympathy for him as he received two yellow cards for late tackles within a minute or so of each other.

Playing with just nine men eventually caught up with the hosts as their goal was finally breached 13 minutes from the time.

Broxburn went for broke in the final stages and were caught out on the counter attack in the final minute and fell to a 2-0 defeat.

Broxburn send their best wishes to Thorniewood for the next round.

Broxburn: Sheridan, Bishop, Gibson, Rarity, Cunningham, Payne, Douglas, Wilson, Craig, Chilton, Cruikshank. Subs: Martin, Dickov, Mackin, Pearson and McCafferty.
