Awards challenge issued

YOUNG people looking for a challenge in the new year are being urged to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

The awards have been helping youths to challenge themselves to improve life skills and abilities as well as taking part in many new activities. Organisers encourage young people to stretch themselves to achieve and have pride in their abilities.

Teamwork is encouraged and through the volunteering component, participants become involved in their community and gain an understanding of some of the problems and issues confronting others.

Spokesman Jim MacKay explained: “Participation on the award is enjoyable and fun. The award is non-competitive and the only person anyone needs to prove anything to is themselves. For many employers, having an award at any of the three levels – bronze, silver or gold – marks a young person out as different, as someone who likes a challenge and has some experience and understanding of teamwork and leadership.”

West Lothian Council’s work with young people team is supporting and encouraging the formation of award groups in youth clubs as well as schools.
