'Small firms should be subsidised'

The Scottish Government should top up workers' wages at firms worst hit by the recession, small business and union leaders have said.

A training support scheme for "viable businesses" is also needed to ensure Scotland can take advantage when the economy recovers, they said.

The joint call for the measures, which are similar to those in Wales, comes from the Federation of Small Businesses in Scotland (FSB) and the STUC (Scottish Trades Union Congress).
