Equipment may halt troop deaths

More troops will die unnecessarily in Afghanistan unless the Government provides much-needed equipment, one of Scotland's most senior military figures warned.

It comes after army chiefs last week called for more helicopters to back the British military strategy.

Brigadier Allan Alstead, the former commanding officer of the King's Own Scottish Borderers, accused the Government of failing to back the troops.
