Call for probe over crossing crash

Politicians called for an urgent safety probe after a train smashed into a car on a rural crossing, killing three elderly people.

No travellers on the Inverness to Wick train were hurt in the crash at the unmanned crossing in the village of Halkirk, Caithness. Northern Constabulary said it would hold an investigation.

Network Rail said there was no indication that the crossing was not functioning correctly when the crash happened.
