MSPs to debate Tory school plans

The Tories will step up calls for a break-up of the monopoly local councils have in the running of state schools.

The issue comes under the spotlight of MSPs at Holyrood after the Tories this week set out proposals for independently-run free schools, operating separately from the current state system.

Tory schools spokeswoman Liz Smith said: "The local authority monopoly on running state schools must be broken."
