Hospital admissions in record high

Hospitals are dealing with more patients then ever before, official figures revealed.

The number of people admitted to hospital reached 1.4 million in 2008/09. This is up more than 50,000 on the previous year.

Emergencies accounted for the highest type of cases at 539,000 while 428,000 were day cases. There were also just under one million operations and procedures carried out.
