Authors back prisons book drive

A publisher has claimed the support of leading authors for a campaign to send unwanted stocks of books to prisons.

Trainspotting writer Irvine Welsh, crime author Ian Rankin and Alexander McCall Smith all back the project to improve libraries in jails.

Hugh Andrew, of Edinburgh-based Birlinn, wants publishers across the UK to donate stock and "build a better life" for inmates.
