Authorities fear cuts may hit jobs

Half of council chiefs fear that up to 22,000 local authority jobs could be lost as a result of public spending cuts, a survey has revealed.

The study also suggested transport and environmental services could be hardest hit if councils need to reduce their spending, followed by education.

A total of 39 local authority chief executives and finance directors were questioned for the poll, carried out by financial and business advisers Grant Thornton.
