Reoffending reaches 10-year high

The number of people who reoffend within two years of being convicted has reached its highest level in a decade, soaring by more than 10,000 in a six-year period.

Figures from the Scottish Government show that of the 53,260 offenders in 2006-07, a total of 23,419 were reconvicted within two years.

The overall 44% reoffending rate is down from 44.9% in 2005-06, when 22,549 of 50,248 offenders were reconvicted within two years.
