Google boss to give festival speech

The boss of internet firm Google will deliver the MacTaggart Lecture at this year's Edinburgh Television Festival.

Dr Eric Schmidt, who will talk about the impact of the internet on the television industry, said it was "a great honour" to be asked to speak at the annual gathering in August.

He said: "I have always been a profound optimist about the potential for technology to improve people's lives, though I am also a realist and understand it can be immensely disruptive in the process. So I look forward to discussing the opportunities and challenges ahead for the TV industry in Edinburgh."
