NHS construction gangsters targeted

Measures have been introduced to try to ensure organised crime gangs do not benefit from lucrative NHS construction projects.

Health Facilities Scotland, a support division of the NHS, has brought in new rules over awarding health service projects. Builders must now only use security firms registered with the Security Industry Authority's approved contractor scheme.

The changes are designed to make sure that any security needed for NHS building projects in Scotland, worth as much as £400 million, comes from legitimate businesses and that taxpayers' money does not end up in the hands of companies that are just fronts for organised crime.
