We will remember them

SUNDAY marked a time for reflection in West Lothian as the annual Remembrance Sunday parades took place.

In towns across the county, local people lined the streets to pay their respects to servicemen and women who fought in conflicts past and present.

And the event was all the more poignant as this year marks the 90th anniversary of the end of WW1.

The parade through Bathgate was led by the Bathgate Band and the Royal British Legion with over 300 people taking part.

The officiating chaplin was Reverend John Bremner and was assisted by Reverend John Robinson.

Local politicians also took part in the event, with local MP Michael Connarty, MSPs Mary Mulligan and Fiona Hyslop, and councillors Willie Boyle and Jim Walker, joining the procession.

Lady Lieutenant, Isobel Brydie, laid a wreath at the memorial along with the Royal Naval Association, British Korean Veterans, Soldiers Sailors and Airmen’s Forces Help, Territorial Army, Army Cadet Force, Air Training Corps, Boys and Girls Brigade and Boy Scouts.

Thomas Morrison, president of Bathgate Legion, laid a wreath on behalf of the legion and piper Fergus Philip played, while the march past salute was attended by the official party at Lindsay House.

A meal was provided after the parade at the legion for all those who attended.

Fred Kaye, of Bathgate British Legion, said the group was delighted by the good turnout on the day and thanked all those who had attended the event.

He said: “Despite the very cold weather, Remembrance in Bathgate was very well attended.

“It was the largest turnout of members and the public in recent years.

“Assistance by Lothian and Borders Police was excellent and thank you all who attended for making the day a wonderful experience for all.”
