Pupils love food – but hate waste

PUPILS at St Mary’s Primary School in Bathgate are helping to reduce the amount of food waste heading for landfill.

The environmentally friendly pupils are demonstrating that unwanted food can be shared or composted as an eco-alternative.

Head teacher Moira Claase, explained: “We have taken on the Love Food, Hate Waste challenge.

To reduce the amount of waste going to a landfill from our dinner hall our eco team decided to organise a waste audit, which showed that two large grey bins were filled with food waste.

“With a concerted effort now we only have half of one bin filled with food waste. That waste will now be composted.

“Juice and milk cartons will be recycled using the blue bins and untouched fruit is being offered to older people.

“The amount of food waste that is disposed off each week is astonishing. Hopefully, the children can share the message to reduce food waste at home.

“We would like to thank the waste services team for their support during this project.”
