Sew easy to create banner links inschool

COLOURFUL textile banners were unveiled this week at Simpson Primary School in Bathgate.

The banners were created by pupils, parents, grandparents and children to portray different aspects of life in West Lothian and will hang permanently at the school’s entrance.

The designs for the large banners were selected from drawings and paintings made by pupils from primary four to seven.

All visitors, staff and pupils were asked to vote for their favourites and the three winning designs were turned into banners during the Threads after-school club.

Textile designer Sally-Ann Provan helped create the banners over eight weeks.

Andrew Miller, executive councillor for education, unveiled the banners along with Gordon Ford, director of education and cultural services.

Mr Miller said: “These banners reflect the inventiveness and originality of the pupil’s designs while at the same time linking to a long-standing tradition and becoming pieces of art for the future.”

Head teacher Lucy MacLean added: “These banners are a wonderful example of what can be achieved when different parts of the community create something together. I am sure that they will be admired for many years to come.”
