Authority are ready to take an energetic look at gym teaching

COUNCILLORS have been given an update on West Lothian pupils PE lessons.

Members of West Lothian's Education Policy Development and Scrutiny Panel were given details on the local authority’s progress in delivering quality lessons.

The group heard that Education Services are currently re-structuring the PE curriculum in light of A Curriculum for Excellence and the authority is incorporating PE and expressive arts, such as dance.

The council is introducing new programmes such as the Perceptual Motor Programme and Basic Moves, particularly in primary schools, encourage physical activity for younger pupils.

The new approach to sports is proving popular with pupils and aims to improve their health and wellbeing.

Executive councillor of education, Andrew Miller, said he was pleased by the results of the report.

He said: “We are making significant progress in the drive towards two hours PE, and we have now set a baseline target of two 50-minute periods for every child, every week.

“As well as highlighting areas of good practice throughout West Lothian, we are looking to provide a range of activities, which capture our young people's enthusiasm and interest for life. PE has changed a lot in recent years.”
