Lisa recognised for her fine work with the young

A WOMAN who is helping to combat underage drinking has received a prestigious award.

Lisa Goodman, support manager at Deans Community High School in Livingston, collected an accolade at the Scottish Education Awards.

Lisa was named Education Supporter of the Year for devoting her time to the care of young people and striving to build positive relationships with the local community.

She volunteers every Friday afternoon as part of a police initiative to combat underage drinking and has also been involved in planning the ‘H@VOC’ disco which aims to reach young people between 12 and 16.

In school Lisa is well known for her creativity and enthusiasm in involving pupils in fundraising activities. She even organised a karaoke for the whole school to raise £500.

Lisa is also part of West Lothian’s Looked After Children team in which she brings a knowledge of children in care from an educational perspective to the forum. She mediates between secondary schools in the area and the team on any new policies and procedures to help vulnerable children in school.

The awards are organised by the Scottish Executive, and Keith Brown, Minister for Schools and Skills, said: “Across Scotland we have many talented and inspiring teachers, who are all contributing to an enriched learning experience for pupils.

“It is important that we recognise this hard work and dedication, which is why I’m pleased to congratulate Lisa Goodman from Deans Community High School for winning the Education Supporter of the Year category at 2009 Scottish Education Awards.”

Andrew Miller, executive councillor for education, added: “After almost seven years at Deans Community High School, Lisa has firmly established herself as a popular and valued member of the team.

“I am delighted that her dedication to enhancing the care and welfare needs of pupils and young people within the community has been recognised at these prestigious awards.

“It’s clear to everyone that Lisa goes above and beyond her role and what is asked of her.

“For example, I know that Lisa volunteers her time to join the police during anti-social behaviour initiatives and speaks to young people about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

“Lisa strives to continually improve the learning experience of pupils who attend Deans Community High School and I’d like to offer her my sincere congratulations on winning such a prestigious and important award.

“She is a fantastic role model for young people in West Lothian.”
