Something for everybody at special fun day

YOUNGSTERS had the chance to come face-to-face with some unusual creatures at a special fun day.

The event, run by Signpost, the support group for families with children who have additional needs, saw Dynamic Earth experts drop in with some of their more exotic exhibits.

The young people got up close and personal with an allosaurus head and learned about being an archaeologist during the ‘mini-digs’.

As well as the fun activities for children, Signpost invited along other exhibitors such as Quest 88 and the No Limits Sports Club, so that families could learn more about opportunities in the area for young people.

The local fire brigade were also in attendance to offer tips on fire safety and show off their fire engine to excited youngsters.

No Limits showed photographs from their recent outdoor adventure trips, and from the Special Olympics, where several young people won medals.

Quest 88 brought along a variety of specially-adapted bikes, trikes and go-karts, demonstrating that even the most severely disabled child or adult can usually be included in family cycling trips.

Amanda Young, Signpost’s information officer, was on hand to talk to families about finding funding, as these items often cost more than a conventional bicycle.

“Signpost is a valuable and important community resource,” said West Lothian Council leader, Councillor Peter Johnston, as he opened the fun day and chatted to families and exhibitors.

“I am impressed by all the different opportunities that are here today.”

Signpost staff were pleased to welcome so many families to the fun day.

A spokeswoman said: “We want young people with additional needs to have the same opportunities and choices as everyone else, and we hope our events help to raise awareness of all the possibilities that are out there.

“We would like to thank everyone who gave up their Saturday morning to make our fun day a success”.
