West Lothian is backing new legislation aimed at cracking down on people causing harm

A NEW campaign supported by West Lothian Council has been launched to help stop harm against adults in Scotland.

Act against harm is a new campaign launched this week to ensure adults living in Scotland who are being harmed or are at risk from harm are supported and protected.

The campaign has been designed to raise awareness of the Adult Support and Protection Act (Scotland) 2007 — the legislation which came into force in October 2008 to help stop acts of deliberate and unintentional harm and neglect taking place.

The television campaign which has been launched this week will be supported by regional press advertising.

There will also be posters and leaflets distributed to GP surgeries, pharmacies and libraries.

West Lothian Community Health and Care Partnership (CHCP) and West Lothian Council are also supporting the national campaign to help deliver the message locally.

The Act allows authorities to make inquiries and take action when they suspect an adult may be at risk of harm, so appropriate support can be put in place to ensure the person at risk receives the help they need.

The campaign, which is being led by the Scottish Government, highlights the importance of speaking to someone if harm is suspected, and signposts people to sources of help and advice.

The latest initiative also spells out the different forms of harm adults at risk may face, such as physical, sexual or psychological harm, neglect or being taken advantage of financially.

David Manion, Chief Executive of Age Concern and Help the Aged in Scotland said:

“We hope this campaign raises public awareness of this legislation which has been designed to help any adults at risk of harm .

“The new legislation also encourages them to seek help for either themselves or someone they may be concerned about.

“It is important to get over the message that help is available and that it’s ok to act.”
