OLDER people throughout West Lothian are set to benefit from a cash boost thanks to a new scheme.
The local authority says over 500 people aged over 60 are expected to benefit from the council’s Income Maximisation Project in just five months.
It is estimated that older residents will receive, on average, an extra £40 per week but some will receive up to £100 extra per week due to extra premiums.
The project aims to increase the income of older people by £1 million by March 2010.
West Lothian Council leader Peter Johnston, is delighted with the funding and the impact it will have on pensioners throughout the county.
He said: “The project has set ambitious targets and aims to make a positive impact for many pensioners across West Lothian.
“In the long term it will aim to improve the quality of life for hundreds, if not thousands, of people aged over 60 living locally.
“The council’s advice shop will dedicate three members of staff to advise and assist those aged over 60, who are most at risk of being financially excluded.
“Many older people do not realise the benefits that are available to them and are unsure where to turn for advice.
“ Our Income Maximisation Project will tackle these issues.
“As well as offering independent, confidential advice the project team will also be on hand to offer customers assistance with completing forms and claiming benefits.
“There will also provide ongoing support throughout the claim process and beyond.”
Those who take advantage of the service will also have the opportunity to find out about the package of services provided by the advice shop, including community talks, presentations and outreach sessions making the service more easily accessible for people aged over 60.
The project plans to work closely with a wide range of local groups and initiatives such as Credit Unions and 50+ Networks, to deliver an advice service that will ease the financial burdens encountered by those over 60.
Bathgate resident, Mrs McCallum, who recently approached the Advice Shop for benefits advice, was full of thanks to the Advice Shop.
She added: “I am very satisfied with the service, I didn’t know these benefits were available and I would not have been able to apply had the Advice Shop not assisted me.”
