Whippet is top dog in national competition

A LOCAL whippet enthusiast is celebrating after his prized pet was named top dog at a national competition.

Sween, owned by Bill and Margaret McQueen, won The National Whippet Racing Federation’s Bend Champion of Champions title in the bitch category at Highgate.

The dog, known at home as Shandy, also took the prize in the National Champion 25lb category and after winning this category, Sween went on to compete with other category-winning bitches for the top title.

Bill (79), from Westrigg, has kept and raced whippets for a number of years and has another prize winning dog, who raced under the name Tormentor, now 11.

He said: “We’re delighted with her, it’s unbelievable because she hadn’t raced against any other dog up until now.

“We take her to Armadale dog track and she won a lot as a pup. Now going to take her to Manchester to compete.
