PUPILS from four West Lothian schools became espionage experts at a special event recently.
Pupils from Deans Community High, Inveralmond Community High, West Calder High and Whitburn Academy put their James Bond skills to the test and took part in a spying master class organised by The Prince’s Trust.
The young people participated in the Spymasters simulated espionage surveillance challenge which is designed to develop team working and communication skills.
At the same time the project decision making, co-operation and leadership, before spending the afternoon showcasing the projects they have completed since joining The Prince’s Trust’s xl programme.
The day hosted at the Jack Kane Sports Centre in Edinburgh, was a celebration for those pupils who have, over the last year, taken part in their schools’ xl initiative.
The programme is designed to help young people to overcome barriers to learning, develop skills and re-engage with their school and education, allowing them to make the most of their time at school, boost their motivation and develop skills for the world of work.
The programme helps young people to become more confident individuals who are more likely to succeed in their studies and play a positive role in their communities.
Geraldine Gammell, director of The Prince’s Trust Scotland, said: “This exciting event offers all participants the opportunity to learn a range of new skills as well as celebrate the success of their achievements within their xl groups over the past year.
“The xl celebration day is an excellent example of how the programme continues to assist young people to engage positively with the education and learn new skills and confidence which will help to give them a better chance of future success.”
Earlier this year, figures produced by Careers Scotland revealed that 78 per cent of those participating in the xl programme in West Lothian have stayed on at school or gone into further or higher education, voluntary work or employment.
Andrew Miller, executive councillor for education added: “I’m delighted that pupils in West Lothian were given the opportunity to take part in this innovative programme as it provides pupils with the platform to learn new skills, meet new people .”
