Bogus caller warning

POLICE are repeating their warning to householders to be on their guard after bogus workmen struck again in the county.

On Saturday afternoon (October 22) there were three incidents reported to police where men were attempting to get access to people’s homes, but ran off when their identity was questioned.

The incidents that were reported were in Chapelton Avenue, Polbeth; Jubilee Road, Whitburn and Charles Crescent, Bathgate.

In each of the cases men called at the house requesting to check water supplies, and sometimes presented identity cards.

When the homeowners questioned the validity of the identity cards, however, they ran off.

A police spokesperson said: “Fortunately these homeowners have been wary of the cold callers trying to get into their homes so have managed to deter them by checking their identity cards.

“We would encourage everyone to do the same, if they are not expecting someone at their house take the time to check their ID – genuine workmen will not mind people calling their employer for verification.

“All too often these people try to target the most vulnerable members of society, so we are asking communities to take responsibility and don’t let anyone into their house if they have not arranged for them to come.

“Please visit the police website for more information on how to deter bogus callers at www.lbp.police.uk/crime_prevention/personal_safety/bogus_callers.aspx

“We are urging people to stay vigilant and report any concerns of incidents like this to police on 0131 311 3131, as we will investigate thoroughly to ensure criminals know bogus callers will not be tolerated in West Lothian.”

Anyone with information on the incidents should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or the charity Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.
