GREENBURN pro Scott Catlin won the Edinburgh and East of Scotland Alliance Championship after a real tussle with playing partner Neil Fenwick of Dunbar.
The pair were out on the longer Gullane No.2 course first, before moving on to Gullane No.3, and Scott had a best of the day 66, five under par, and this put him four ahead of the man who was to end the day as his nearest challenger.
In the afternoon the East Lothian golfer was the epitome of steadiness while Scott dropped a couple of shots, though he did manage his share of birdies.
But by the 11th hole his four-shot lead had evaporated.
Both players birdied the 14th but it was the Fauldhouse man who forged ahead again at the next hole with another birdie.
Scott picks up the Uniroyal Trophy for his success and is looking forward to the Tartan Tour this summer though he has an ambition to compete on the Europro circuit.
To do so he needs sponsorship and that is not easy to come by in these financially challenging times, but he remains hopeful.
Fenwick’s second round 62 was three better than Catlin’s and his 132 total left him a shot ahead of Duddingston’s Tom Buchanan in third and two better than Order of Merit winner David Patrick of Elie and Terry Mathieson of King’s Acre in joint fourth.
In the handicap section West Linton’s Peter Sewell lifted the Gavin Clark Trophy, after finishing no fewer than eight ahead of his nearest competitor with a 130 total founded on a first round net 61 on the No.3 course off his eight mark.
Second place went to Duddinston five handicapper Robert Denholm with Wilson Morton (5) of Dunbar third on 139 total.
The Alliance is in action this week at Duddingston – was postponed from earlier in the season – before the annual match with the West Alliance early next month.
There should be quite a representation of locals, with both amateurs and pros involved in this latter contest.
