Deer Park, Greenburn and Pumpherston golf courses hosts high marking events

THE Linlithgowshire Association has had its Spring Handicaps at three local venues with the lower handicappers at Deer Park, the middle range men faced with Greenburn while the high marks were at Pumpherston.

Deer Park proved the severest test but at the same time there was the most meritorious performance, from winner, Bathgate youngster Calum Nisbet, who got round in a super par equalling 72 for net 66 to leave the field trailing in his wake and the next placed some five shots behind.

An honourable mention must go to the winner at Greenburn too, for his grand 63 net, Stephen Brown of Pumpherston.

CSS was 71 at Greenburn for both home and away players while 70 was the mark for both categories at Pumpherston.

Still on Linlithgowshire business, the Summer League has been going for several weeks but it was only on Friday that all the sections kicked in.

The C section has already completed three matches — Binny had to withdraw from competition this season so there are only four teams in it.

Uphall lead with a 100 per cent record with West Lothian getting four points from their three matches and Linlithgow two from three.

Niddry Castle have still to trouble the scorer from their similar complement.

Friday's results were as follows: A Section: Dundas Parks 2 Bathgate 4, Pumpherston 3.5 Shotts 2.5.

B Section: Greenburn 3,5 Deer Park 2.5, Harburn 6 Bridgend 0.

C Section: West Lothian 4 Linlithgow 2.

Deer Park had its Harlequin and Lombard event on Sunday and it was eight handicap Brian Thomson at the head of proceedings when all the totting up was done.

His 76-8=68 just won on a countback from a 90-22=68 from John Gibson who was competing in his very first competition and nearly had a fairytale start.

Third spot was taken by the 75-5=70 of Paul Logan.

Many times Club Champ David Thomson had a scratch 71 which got him down to the scratch mark again.

Harburn has had its Storry Cup and it counted as a Scott Medal Qualifier as well.

Top man was Bob Cullen, but again only on a countback.

His 80-12=68 was matched by Steven Campbell (15). Joint third went to Gary Money (14) and Gary Sneddon (21) on 69 net.

The previous midweek's Kirk Rosebowl Qualifier was led by Bruce Pringle with 77-13=64, a couple better than runner up Mark Stanton (15) with David Aitchison (15) a shot further away in third place.

The Ladies of the West Calder club got a chilly evening for their recent Brooch event and it was Anne Stokes with 85-12=73 who prevailed in the end but again it was on a countback from Sharon Marr (15). Dorothy Wilson took third with 75 off her thirteen mark.

The ladies had a less than glorious start to their Midlothian League campaign, though, going down away to Broomieknowe by a 4-1 margin.

The Seniors at West Lothian have had their qualifying for the Handicap Championship and it was the 89-21=68 of Tom McAlpine which led by a shot from both Terry Kehoe (15) and Brian Purdie (8).

And there was the May Medal at the club on Sunday. Ken Murphy's 76-11=65 was best , two ahead of joint second Ian Whigham (4) and Gavin Duncan (9).

Bathgate members had their Captain's Prize event on Sunday and it took a countback to give Colin Brett top spot from Graeme Bell. Both players were on 43 points.

Best placed in the First Class section was Willie Henderson with 41. A good scratch return too from Martin O'Hara — he was round in 67.

Pumpherston had its May Medal at the weekend and it was S Wilson (24) at the top on 63 net from second placed R Scott (15) on 66. AG Duthie took third with 67 net off his sixteen mark.

Linlithgow had some good scoring in its Galaday Plate event on Saturday. Duncan Campbell (10) was best on 63 net with A Lewis (9) in second a shot adrift. S Logan and I Ower , 14 and 25 handicap respectively, took joint third on 65 net.

Greenburn players were out in force for their Tom Dolan Trophy in Texas Scramble format. Winning combination was that of Brian Hislop, Andrew Gardner, Ian Whitelaw and Ian Fisher on 55.5.

Second was shared between James Johnston, Lee Salmond, Blair Todd and Paul Young and the formation of Robert McLean, William Salmond, Jim Timmins and Andy Sneddon. Both sets of lads had 55.6.
