Prestonfield to host derby tie

THERE will be battle of West Lothian on Saturday when county neighbours Linlithgow Rose host Whitburn in the Scottish Junior Cup.

The second-round draw has paired two of the region’s top dogs in battle and a cup classic is expected at Prestonfield.

The sides met only two weeks ago in the Super League with the Burnie earning bragging rights the first time around following a 2-1 win.

Both boast strong Scottish Cup traditions with Rose lifting the trophy in 2002 and 2007, and Whitburn in 2000.

A massive crowd is expected that day with many neutrals heading for Prestonfield to see the headline bout.

And Linlithgow boss Brian Fairley admits it has the potential to be a game to remember.

“It’s amazing how this competition serves up games like this so early in the season,” he said.

“It’s a great game for the supporters. They beat us two weeks ago but that result will have no bearing on what happens in the cup.

“It’s only a pity one side will drop out.”

Whitburn boss Derek Strickland was upbeat about the fixture.

He added: “It’s a huge game for both clubs.

“We met at this stage before but that was before I came here.

“We wouldn’t have chosen this game but then neither would Linlithgow. But that’s what the cards throw at you so we’ll just have to face it.

“We are getting our full squad back now so we’ll be ready.”
