Athletics: 5K road race proves popular with students

THE sixth annual 5K Road Race took place at West Lothian College recently with a massive number of runners taking part.

The race was organised by the HND Sports Coaching and Development students at the college and attracted the serious and fun-seeking runners.

As part of their ‘Events Management’ module, the class planned and organised the race, which is held annually within the college’s grounds.

Over 50 runners from junior to professional level took part in the race which also included several members of staff from West Lothian College.

West Lothian College Principal Mhairi Laughlan, said: “We were very happy to see so many members of staff taking part in the race, and were also delighted to have so many people out supporting the event.

“The HND students did a fantastic job organising the race and they should be very proud of how well the event turned out.”

Professional runner Brian Turner from Livingston defended his title in 17 minutes 24 seconds, winning the men’s category while Lynne Murray from Falkirk was the first women across the line in 20 minutes 44 seconds.

Brian said: “I only decided to run at the last minute. I really wanted to defend my title but was unsure of my fitness. I am delighted to have won again making it the fourth time in six years!”

Lynne added: “I was conscious of fellow competitor Louise Crilly, close behind me all the way but was really happy to hold on and win. Although the course was tough the race itself was well organised and marshalled by the students.

“Fitness and injuries permitting, I hope to come back and defend my title next year.”

Goody bags were handed out to all that took part courtesy of sponsors including Nike Livingston, Fyffes Bananas, Run & Become Edinburgh and LA Fitness.
