Fishing: Bigger boys stay near top of water

ALTHOUGH winter is evidently here, larger specimens are still predominantly feeding higher in the water at Allandale Tarn Fishery in West Calder.

Patterns such as dark olive damsels, black dancer or black rabbits still remain tasty favourites.

Bill Sloan of Livingston landed two at 16lb 7oz. The heaviest at 13lb 3oz was on the Allandale damsel which is accounting for a number of the larger trout.

But by the warmer afternoons spiders and pearly hares lugs fished in the surface film and darker shuttlecock CDC’s are still catching also.

Floating lines are mostly recommended. Only occasionally is it worth switching to a slow sink or intermediate line when fishing a team of buzzers.

Also traditional wets increase the rate of descent, usually later in the colder afternoons, when okey dokeys are now catching also.
