Athletics: Mum and daughter brave elements in Edinburgh Park Run

THE Boxing Day Edinburgh Park Run proved to be a real family affair for Lothian Running club with mum and daughter pair Mags and Lana Turnbull the club’s only representatives.

However the journey through to the Edinburgh waterfront, which was covered by a light fall of snow and was icy in places, was made all the more worthwhile with Lana racing to victory in the women’s event, which had 22 competitors, in a total field of 75 runners.

Lana covered the 5k course in 21 minutes 53 seconds which was just short of her PB of 20 minutes 36 seconds.

Mags was also well outside the time she set last time, getting round in 52nd, 11th female, in 27 minutes 02 seconds.

Meanwhile, Blackburn sisters Ashley, Sarah and Hannah Stewart were in action on Monday at a freezing Musselburgh Racecourse.

Twins Ashley and Sarah ran in the Famous New Year ‘Powderhall’ Sprint Handicap but were both eliminated in their heats.

The duo also suffered a similar fate in the shorter 90 metres handicap.

Younger sister Hannah [10] running at her first New Year meeting ran in the Youth’s 90 metres handicap but also failed to make it through the heats.

Hannah’s main event should have been the Youth’s 800 metres handicap, but this race along with the Open 1600 metres handicap were both cancelled.

The Lothian RC hosted Festive Handicap, which was due to be run at Beecraigs Country Park on Boxing Day, was also cancelled.
