Duncan Goodhew makes a splash at county school
OLYMPIC legend Duncan Goodhew made a splash with school pupils last week after taking the plunge with 140 youngsters from St Kentigern’s Academy.
Goodhew paid a visit to the West Lothian secondary on Thursday to raise awareness for Swimathon 2010.
The event, which is the world’s biggest swimming fundraiser, is due to hit more than 500 pools across the UK between 16-18 April.
A whopping £1.5million is expected to be raised by the event, which will then go to Marie Curie Cancer Care and The Swimathon Foundation.
The majority of the funds will help Marie Curie nurses provide free nursing care to cancer patients and those with other terminal illnesses in their own homes.
Swimathon’s President, Goodhew, remains one of Britain’s most instantly recognisable sportsmen.
His many achievements in the pool culminated in a last-gasp gold medal in the 100m breaststroke at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
Duncan was awarded an MBE for services to sport in 1981 and is now an author and motivational speaker.
