Commonwealth Games gold medalist Colin Fleming hosts tennis festival at county school

COMMONWEALTH Games hero Colin Fleming proved to be an ace visitor to a county school this week when the tennis star dropped into Linlithgow Academy.

Fleming, who won a gold medal for Scotland at this year’s Commonwealth Games, visited primary five and six pupils for a special Tennis Festival which had been organised by a working group.

The group consisted of representatives from Linlithgow Tennis Club (Michael Fleming, Head Tennis Coach and Martin Fleming), PE Specialist Lesley Malone, Tennis Scotland (David Gibson) and Sport and Outdoor Education, West Lothian Council (Lauren Mclean and Matt Costello, Active School Coordinators).

The festival was also supported by Linlithgow Academy (Janette Leach, PT of PE) who provided use of their sports hall.

Linlithgow Primary, Low Port Primary and Springfield Primary all entered teams into the festival with each school being encouraged to enter teams of players who currently play tennis or who are interested in playing tennis.

The players were split up into four groups and they competed to see who could win the most games.

The winners of each group were: Matthew Hamilton and Calum Anderson – Linlithgow Primary, Tom Watson and Louis Signorini – Linlithgow Primary, Cara Semple and Rachel McFarlane – Linlithgow Primary, Jennifer Brown and Kirsten Wyles – Linlithgow Primary.

Fleming attended the festival and took part in an exhibition match against his brother and tennis coach, Michael Fleming and a handful of lucky S6 pupils too.
