Linlithgow tennis ace eyeing Wimbledon glory

LINLITHGOW tennis star Colin Fleming believes he is in with a real chance of becoming a Wimbledon champion after he and partner Ross Hutchins became the first British doubles team to reach the quarter-final stage in 18 years, writes Eric Mackinnon.

The pair beat Australian duo Stephen Huss and Ashley Fisher in straight sets to tee up a meeting with Christopher Kas and Alexander Peya.

“We’re obviously delighted to be through to the quarter-finals now but this hasn’t completely come out of the blue,” said Fleming after the win against the Aussies on Tuesday afternoon.

“We feel like we’ve been at a good level throughout the grass court season and we’ve continued that level into this tournament and thankfully we’ve won through three matches.

“Of course we’re delighted to be in the quarter-finals and right now we’re looking forward to the next match.”

The last Brit pair to reach the final eight was Chris Wilkinson and Paul Hand in 1993.

Fleming will also be in mixed doubles action this week when he teams up with Jocelyn Rae, with whom he won a gold medal in last year’s Delhi Commonwealth Games.
