Scotland call-up for club vet

LOTHIAN Running Club’s super-vet Ian Leggett represented Scotland in the International Masters Cross-Country Championship in Bellahouston Park, Glasgow.

Running in the combined MV65 and MV70 race, Ian finished 24th overall.

He was sixth in the MV70 category in which he was representing his country, setting a time of 28 minutes 35 seconds.

This helped the Scottish team to a hard-earned and well-deserved bronze medals in the category.

The club also had a runner in the Open Race where MV50 veteran Kenny Mearns came home in 60th place in 30 minutes 01 seconds.

The club's Max McNeil was among a large number of Scottish athletes who travelled to Liverpool on Saturday for the second race in this winter’s McCain Cross-Country Challenge, with the race taking place at the city’s Sefton Park.

The Under 20 and Senior events also served as GB selection races for European Cross Country in Slovenia a week on Saturday, as well as selection for the UK representatives for the European Clubs Cross-Country in February.

Underfoot conditions were unusually good for Liverpool and a cold wind kept away the threatened rain until after the last athlete crossed the line.

In a top-quality Under-20 line up Max, 18, from Uphall Station finished 63rd of the 108 runners covering the 6.7km course in a time of 22 minutes 36 seconds.

Chloe Cox continued her good vein of form by taking the women’s title at Saturday’s Edinburgh Parkrun along an extremely windy Granton/Silverknowes waterfront.

Chloe covered the 5k course in 18 minutes 27 seconds which also placed her 8th overall.

The only other club runner in the capital run was Cliff Dicker who crossed the line in 80th place in 24.35.

178 completed.

Club members were out in greater numbers at the Falkirk Parkrun where conditions were equally as stormy as Edinburgh, and it was no surprise that there were very few PBs recorded.

Kenton and Saran Jones were the first club male and female finishers in fifth and 27th [6th female] places respectively.

Club junior Iain Horsburgh made his race debut and won the JM14 category. Iain finished 33rd overall in 23.22, pipping his mum Jill who was one place behind in 23.26.

Club Results: 5th Kenton Jones 19.38, 15th Alan McIntosh 21.13, 18th Paul Young 21.27, 27th and 6th female Saran Jones 22.44, 33th and 1JM14 Iain Horsburgh 23.22, 34th and 8th female Jill Horsburgh 23.26, 43rd Stuart Bird 24.14, 52nd and 13th female Shona Greig 25.06, 61st Ted Finch 25.56, 64th and 18th female Mags Turnbull 26.24, 75th and 6JW14 Alice Horsburgh 27.47, 102nd and 38th female Val Finch 34.56, 103rd Mike Turnbull 38.08 PB.
