High-flying gymnasts celebrate milestone

IT was party time for Astro Gymnastics as the group marked their 15th anniversary with a big birthday bash.

Friends, family and visitors descended upon West Lothian College to take part in the celebrations which also doubled as a chance to raise funds for the Livingston-based group.

Over 60 gymnasts took part in displays and performances throughout the day as visitors watched in amazement.

The senior squad dazzled the crowds with their inspiring gravity-defying efforts.

There were also stalls, a tombola and club memorabilia available which all helped to swell the club’s coffers by £1040 which will go towards coaching, equipment and running costs for the group.

Astro’s Fiona Fyfe said: “It was a really excellent day.

“The main reason for the celebration was to mark the 15th birthday of Astro Gymnastics which is a real achievement for the club.

“It was also a chance to show what we do at Astro Gymnastics and let family members and friends see their loved ones performing.

“We had lots of visitors and gymnasts at the birthday celebrations and the whole day was a real success.

“A lot of the time families will only get to see their children perform in competitions, so it was nice to give them an extra opportunity.

“It also allowed them to showcase how far they can develop and inspire those thinking of taking up gymnastics or who are new to the sport.

“We also managed to raise some vital funds for the club.

“They will help us to keep running as well as improving.

“So here’s to another 15 years!”

The club was set up by head coach Caroline Gourlay who still runs the group.

Astro Gymnastics have enjoyed numerous successes over the years with a number of their members going on to represent their country.

The birthday celebrations were held on Saturday, December 10.
