Whitburn beaten by Bo’ness on League Cup duty

WHITBURN fielded a somewhat makeshift side for their League Cup clash with reigning Superleague champs Bo’ness on Saturday and unsurprisingly fell to defeat.

The Burnie were without three senior players and also named five trialists in their squad for the match in which the visitors started strongly.

Will Snowdon cracked the post and the crossbar in the opening 60 seconds but they didn’t make the breakthrough until just after the half-hour mark when David Morrison curled in a cracker.

Bo’ness doubled their advantage after 61 minutes when ex-Livingston senior star Paul Shields rolled home a Chris McFadyen cross at the back post.

Andy Shirra scored a third for the visitors from close range after an effort from Morrison was blocked.

Gary Millar opened his Whitburn account with a consolation goal 11 minutes from time after he drilled the ball across McGurk and into the top corner.

With Whitburn manager Mattie Coulter currently on holiday, assistant Andy Thomson took charge and he was pleased with the display of the patchwork side.

He said: “It has been a tough start but we knew it was going to be like that. We had four players when we took over so Mattie and I have had to build a new team.

“We’re getting there. There are some promising youngsters and we’re looking to add a bit of experience this week to bolster things.”
