LINLITHGOW Rose were stunned by Whitburn who knocked their illustrious neighbours out of the Scottish Junior Cup with a second win over them in as many weeks.
The Burnie drew first blood in the Super League a week ago when they ran out 2-1 winners but this weekend the stakes increased in the cup.
Whitburn shaded a tetchy, tense first half but after the restart they upped the ante and began to forge openings.
Colin Strickland smashed the ball against the post after a terrific turn and shot just inside the box before he found space down the right wing to send over a superb cross for Alex Lurinski, only for Rose No.1 Stevie Pinkowski to bring off a great stop.
Though the pressure mounted time was running out and a draw looked the likely outcome.
But with just three minutes left on the clock Whitburn shattered the deadlock and Linlithgow’s Scottish Cup dreams.
Substitute David Murphy was the architect as he swung in a cross from the right that was parried back into the box by Pinkowski.
Midfielder Chris Dolan had followed the ball and almost tore a hole in the net when he unleashed a ferocious drive from 15 yards.
There was no time for Linlithgow to get back into the match and the Burnie emerged victorious to go into the pot for the third round draw, which they are hosting on Sunday in their Social Club at 1pm.
