Dynamo's first ever trophy makes up for last year's disappointment

DYNAMO Whitburn won their first-ever trophy at the weekend as they banished the pain of two cup final defeats last season.

It was a case of third time lucky for the amateur side who play in the Lothian and Edinburgh AFA.

After losing 1-0 in both their cup final appearances last year Whitburn were determined to bring the cup home to West Lothian this season and went to the capital for the Victory Cup final clash with Balerno in confident mood.

The match was an evenly contested game in which both teams played entertaining football but there was a few early scares for before the county side took the lead.

Andy Flanagan was the Whitburn hero as he smashed a 30-yard free kick into the top corner.

Unfortunately it proved to be a lead which didn’t last long as some bad defending allowed Balerno to try a pot-shot from the edge of the area which caught the keeper by surprise and sneaked in off the post.

Dynamo pushed forward in search of a goal to regain the lead and they got their just rewards when Craig Greenan managed to catch the Balerno keeper on the turn with a beautiful lob before Flanagan added a third on the stroke of half-time.

After the break although Balerno enjoyed long spells with the ball they didn’t really threaten until Whitburn were reduced to 10 men when Callaghan’s misjudged tackle earned him an early bath.

And with their numerical advantage Balerno pulled a goal back and ensured a nervy finish but it was too little too late as Whitburn held on for their first taste of glory.

The club would like to thank the Clachan Bar, Whitburn, for their hospitality after the game, and for their continued support over the past three years. They would also like to thank the Fairway in Bathgate for their sponsorship
