Whitburn knocked off top

A WONDER goal by Tranent’s Chris Inglis was enough to knock Whitburn off the top of the league.

Burnie had been leading the charge for the title after making a great start to the season and began the game well, with Blair Young’s close-range shot ricocheting off a couple of defenders before being cleared.

On the half hour, Willie Rodger’s corner found Martin Bucknall, but he headed over.

Then, against the run of play, Tranent grabbed the lead when Inglis connected with a clearance to send a thunderous low drive into the net for a half-time lead.

Despite pushing for an equaliser, Burnie could not break through a stubborn Tranent defence, who dug in to protect their lead.

Whitburn boss Robert Lee said: “We are a young side and still have a lot to learn. I felt we could have taken something from the game.”
