WHITBURN came from a goal down to clinch a second-round Junior Cup win over Newburgh.
Both teams fielded unchanged teams in the cup replay following last week’s 1-1 draw.
And like that clash, it was Newburgh who drew first blood with Scott Finlay opening the scoring early on.
But after this setback it was virtually all Whitburn.
The Burnie dominated the first half and after some heroics from Newburgh’s goalkeeper, the pressure finally told when Mark Sharp fired home the equaliser.
Whitburn doubled their lead midway through the second half when Spence dinked the ball over an opponent wide for Sharp to run onto. He drove up the wing and cut the ball back to Darren Wilson who slammed the ball into the net.
Incredibly, Newburgh’s James Scott was sent off after being given a second yellow after questioning a refereeing decision – that actually went in their favour. Frustrated, he grabbed the referee and seemed to get another red and eventually he had to be escorted to the dressing room.
Despite the lost man, it was Newburgh who scored next when Kenneth Hynd’s 30-yard screamer went in off the underside of the bar.
But the recovery lasted all of two minutes as a great run by Wilson ended in him squaring to Sharp and he scored from close in again.
Super sub Dewi Taylor came on with his customary 15 minutes to go, this time for an injured Rodger.
Again his speed proved too much for the tiring Fifers and he was brought down in the box. King netting the penalty with aplomb and sent Whitburn into the third round of the cup.
West Calder United’s Junior Cup adventure came to an abrupt end with Neilston beating them 3-0 at home.
